Last week we talked about the causes of stress in the workplace, but how do you know if it has taken its toll on you, on your employees or co-workers? Here are 10 clear signs that indicate this.
Today we will start with the first 5 signs of work-related stress:
1. Work longer hours:
Start early, work late and during breaks. This "can't stop for a second" behaviour is a clear reference to someone who is struggling with their workload.
2. Visibly tired:
It is not uncommon for people who are stressed to have difficulty sleeping at night. If an employee/colleague seems exhausted on a regular basis, it could be a telltale sign of stress.
3. More absences:
Beginning to book more time off than usual, taking regular short-term absences for an ongoing problem may be a reflection of underlying stress.
4. Unusual behaviour:
It is common for stressed people to act "out of character".
For example, they may start arriving late, behave aggressively or be unusually quiet.
5. Decreased work performance:
It is difficult for anyone to perform at their best if they are stressed in relation to work.
Lack of concentration, indecision and inability to complete tasks are clear signs.
As important as it is to understand the causes, it is also important to know what a stressed person looks like, so that we can take the necessary actions to reduce stress, and thus prevent burnout!
See you next week to talk about the other 5 signs, and let us know if you identify with any of them...
