3 Characteristics of Burnout Which one do you have?

While there are different aspects that describe burnout syndrome, there are three essential characteristics that, if present, are a key sign of very advanced levels of burnout.

These are:

  • Emotional exhaustion or burnout: This is when you are emotionally exhausted by the demands of the job and feel that you can't give more of yourself, either physically or mentally.
  • Depersonalisation. This can vary depending on the level of burnout you are in. This is when you start to become cold and distant, both with clients and colleagues. At this point you tend to lose interest in your work.
  • Loss of self-fulfilment. In this characteristic we begin to lose the idea that we are self-sufficient and capable of doing our work efficiently. Doubts and insecurities appear that affect our work performance.

Honesty with ourselves is key to recognise if we are experiencing any - or all - of these characteristics at the moment. This would indicate that we are suffering from burnout, and the next step would be to start looking for help to overcome it.

For this, knowing how burned out we are is of vital importance. If you want to, take the burnout test on this link. It will show you if you are in time to prevent it, or if your burnout is already very advanced and what you should do about it.
