Recognise the types of burnout in order to take action
Burnout refers to a collection of different physical, emotional and mental reactions that occur in response to prolonged stress and overwork.
Consequently, chronic stress contributes to anxiety, depression, cardiovascular disease and emotional difficulties.
However, you may sometimes find yourself experiencing symptoms of burnout at work without being aware of it, simply because you are not experiencing the typical and more familiar signs.
The reason for this is that there are three types of burnout syndrome, and if you become more familiar with one than the others, it will be more difficult to recognise them and take action.
So what are the types of burnout?
The presenting symptoms are similar, but the behaviour does not seem to be the same.
👉 1. Exhaustion due to work overload:
Sufferers are overwhelmed by an overload of work, with too many responsibilities or too many commitments that they do not feel able to cope with.
They are willing to risk their health and personal lives in pursuit of their ambition.
👉 2. Exhaustion due to lack of challenges:
Signs of burnout in this group show a sense of lack of personal development in their job.
Unappreciation, boredom and lack of learning opportunities are common.
As these people find no passion or pleasure in their work, they cope with the emotional burden, distancing themselves and avoiding their responsibilities. This indifference often leads to a general disengagement.
👉 3. Exhaustion due to neglect:
This type of burnout is the result of feeling incompetent or unable to keep up with the demands of their job. These employees tend to be passive and unmotivated.
Do you identify with any of them? If so, next week we'll talk about what actions to take to avoid/prevent each one!
