The term was first described in 1974, after the psychoanalyst Herbert Freudenbergerobserved how volunteers at a clinic for drug addicts in New York showed a progressive loss of energy to the point of exhaustion.

After decades of study, burnout will be included in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) in 2022. International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) of the World Health Organisation, defining it as a "syndrome resulting from chronic stress in the workplace that was not successfully managed".
