While it is very important to answer the question "How do I manage stress? it is equally - if not more - important to answer what can I do to become less stressed?
In the case of the first question, how do we calm down once we are already stressed? In the case of the second question, what can we do so that we don't have to apply the first question so much?
Although the situations are the same, the interpretation of the questions is related to objectivity.
Learning to change the way we perceive day-to-day events can make the difference between a chaotic life and a harmonious one.
So, let's get down to action:
The key is to start regulating yourself BEFORE you reach stress:
The first step is to recognise: "I'm starting to get stressed out, why?"
The next step is to ask the right questions:
- What is the WORST that can happen if things don't go the way I have in mind?
- Am I waiting for my peace of mind to come from the results?
- Can I have peace of mind even if not everything goes my way?
- How would you interpret this same situation if you were not stressed?
This is a "stress moment to stress moment" exercise. With a quick scan of our thoughts and asking the right questions, it drastically changes how we view the event.
The most important thing is to always keep in mind the magical "I can look at this situation without stress. I can see this situation without fear/rage/anxiety". The root of the interpretation is in us, not in the event.
