Physically present, but emotionally absent?

A fortnight ago we talked in more depth about emotional exhaustion, one of the essential characteristics of people with burnout.

Today we are going to know in more detail what it is to be "depersonalised", the second essential characteristic.

One of the most important methods of prevention is to recognise that what is happening to us may - or may not - be burnout.

So what is depersonalisation and what does a person who is depersonalised look like?

Depersonalisation is experienced as negative feelings towards our own tasks and towards others, which leads us to distance ourselves and emotionally withdraw from reality.

Once it starts, it develops into cynicism and low self-fulfilment, which translates into ineffectiveness at work.

This brings with it self-criticism, devaluation, self-sabotage and disregard for the scope and value of both our work and the organisation we are in.

It includes distant attitudes towards work in general and distant attitudes towards the people we work for and with.

We could say that, if we do not have the necessary emotional tools, depersonalisation ends up acting as a negative strategy to face reality, because it allows us to walk away from situations that we find conflictive, instead of facing them and resolving them.

Depersonalisation is an indicator that exhaustion has been building up, and our energy is drained.

Smiling, being kind, sharing starts to become tiresome because we feel deprived.

Seeking help at this point is key, because to heal this symptom we need the vital energy that we are lacking.

Here the guidance and knowledge of a professional will make the journey much more manageable, quicker and more enjoyable.
