The term was first described in 1974, after psychoanalyst Herbert Freudenberger psychoanalyst Herbert Freudenberger observed how volunteers at a drug clinic in New York experienced a progressive loss of energy until they became exhausted.

After decades of study, in 2022 "burnout" was included in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) of the World Health Organization, defining it as a "syndrome resulting from chronic workplace stress that was not successfully managed."
