Regardless of whether you are a work-oriented person by nature or simply enjoy what you do, it is very important to bear in mind that if we don't set ourselves limits, we can end up suffering from burnout.
The tricky thing is that it is a subtle process, one that we are not aware of, in which we can reach the point of seeing the symptoms as something 'normal.'
What can we do to prevent burnout?
- Define the root causes: Do you dislike your job? Do you feel that you are not paid enough for the workload? Have you failed to achieve a balance between your personal and professional life? Are you not setting boundaries in areas where you should? Knowing the root cause will show you the path to take the right actions.
- Ask for help/delegate: Think of someone you could ask to help you with your workload. It could be a colleague, but they don't necessarily have to work with you. Reducing your workload can be crucial in preventing burnout.
- Set realistic expectations for your to-do list: How many items on your agenda can you accomplish without overloading yourself? – Set a number and stick to it.
- Learn to communicate with your employer: It is essential to communicate when their expectations and/or our workload are unrealistic. Let them know respectfully how you feel and offer other solutions.
While setting boundaries can be uncomfortable at first, it is crucial for our own well-being and health.
Avoiding burnout is all about being aware of the areas where we are overdoing it and making the necessary adjustments.
Only we know when our boundaries are being crossed, and therefore, only we are responsible for setting them.
