Although there are various aspects that describe burnout syndrome, there are three essential characteristics that, if present, are a key sign of very advanced levels of fatigue.
These are:
- Emotional exhaustion or fatigue: This is when you are emotionally exhausted by the demands of work and feel that you cannot give any more of yourself, either physically or mentally.
- Depersonalization. This can vary depending on your level of exhaustion. It is when you start to feel cold and distant, both with customers and colleagues. At this point, you usually lose interest in your work.
- Loss of personal fulfillment. With this characteristic, we begin to lose the idea that we are self-sufficient and capable of doing our work efficiently. Doubts and insecurities arise that affect our job performance.
Honesty with ourselves is key to recognizing whether we are experiencing any—or all—of these characteristics at the moment. This would indicate that we are suffering from burnout, and the next step would be to start seeking help to overcome it.
To do this, it is vitally important to know how exhausted we are. If you want to find out, take the burnout test at this link. It will tell you whether you are in time to prevent it, or whether your state of exhaustion is already very advanced and what you should do about it.
